THE ROLE & THE TEAM
Zalando’s latest and greatest team (Echo) is being created within the Search and Browse - Experience department responsible for an assortment of business-critical functionalities relating to Zalando’s Search and Category pages. Team Echo will be working exclusively on our high-profile Inspiration and Entertainment programme of work actively looking to engage and inspire Zalando's 50 million customers across 25 countries on their online shopping journey.
We’ve recently taken the exciting decision to open an office in Shenzhen, China. The new team, (Echo) will be the backbone ensuring our established European teams and our new Asian teams collaborate and work effectively together. As a team, we aim to move fast whilst always ensuring Operational Excellence is at the forefront of our mind.
In this particular role you would be leading a team consisting of 5 engineers split across both web and mobile platforms. As the Echo Team is in its infancy you’ll be closely involved in helping to hire and establish the team as a starting point. Looking forward, Team Echo will be facilitating code contributions from Shenzhen into our already established European codebase, to include but not limited to: ways of working, technology selection and production ownership.
We’re very excited about this new venture within Zalando and are looking for a motivated individual with experience managing DevOps teams to come in and drive this area forward.
WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
You will lead hiring for the new team aligned with the above structure, building an experienced and motivated unit.
You will support, lead and inspire a diverse team of 5 engineers while ensuring smooth delivery and continuous improvements to business critical systems.
You will establish effective ways of working and efficient code contribution methods between Asian and European engineering teams.
You will support and drive architectural and design decisions in the team, contribute to the priorities, and advise on technology selection.
You will ensure operational excellence is paramount in our approach to engineering.
You will help manage the Search and Browse - Experience priorities and roadmap alongside your Engineering Manager peers in both Asia and Europe.
You will communicate progress and challenges to Leadership on a regular cadence, retrospectively looking to continually improve the team.
You will foster an inclusive & diverse team environment.
WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF…
You are a committed leader with a solid understanding of modern development practices.
You have a history of supporting and mentoring a team of DevOps engineers.
You have hands-on experience managing teams across differing timezones,
You are comfortable and experienced working with various disciplines in a large organisation, such as Principal Engineers, and Project Managers.
You are passionate about iteratively improving engineering practices, quality and efficiency.
You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and can articulate complex technical topics and solutions in a clear and concise manner.
You have experience working with Kubernetes.
You have web development experience.
You have extensive experience working in a continuous deployment environment.
Bonus Skills:
You have a proven track record as an individual contributor, particularly within a DevOps organisation.
You have experience leading teams across platforms (Web, mWeb, Mobile).
You have established a team from scratch before.
You have experience with React.
You have strong experience with Monitoring and Observability.
You have past experience in the E-commerce industry.
