THE ROLE & THE TEAM
In our department we create, maintain, enhance and optimize ERP processes and applications. The backend principal engineer role requires expertise in system design, software engineering methodologies, and operational excellence for systems related to our ERP system landscape.
Responsibilities include leading system designs, contributing to technical innovation, and driving operational improvements. The role is responsible for the architecture of systems built within the ERP department. The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication abilities. They must contribute to defining engineering best practices and governance guidelines, applying software design methodologies, and developing system-level narratives and solution architectures. Additionally, they should demonstrate recognized expertise in S/4HANA and BTP environments and contribute to defining technical and operational frameworks. The role requires ensuring quality of operational artefacts, examining production behaviours, and moderating activities to ensure operational excellence. The candidate should be capable of suggesting flows and alternate specifications, proposing reasoned solutions, and making decisions in crisis situations. They must drive technical innovation, research and propose solutions to improve productivity, and reduce complexity in business interdependencies. Furthermore, the candidate should take a leading role in the implementation of our ERP strategy. Effective communication across teams and the ability to scale through delegati on are crucial aspects of this role.

WHAT WE'D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
Define and plan the backend ERP engineering strategy
Implement backend development guidelines to ensure ERP backend development and solution architectures are optimal and inline with our ERP strategy
Define and Improve production readiness process
Define a testing strategy and guidelines for the backend processes in the ERP landscape
Define a backend operational strategy, establish and execute operational excellence ceremonies and guidelines to ensure operational excellence within the ERP area
Define and implement our integration strategy and its governance model
Drive architectural decisions in project phase of solution design
Oversee, review and approve solution designs of the major S/4HANA backend development within our department acting as a knowledge hub with visibility on a big picture
Be the tech-lead and role model for our ERP engineering department in relation to code design and testing approach e.g. providing expert advice to other backend engineers
Lead and focus on proof-of-concepts using new cutting-edge SAP and ERP cloud-based development technology.
Drive clean core strategy guiding initiatives such as CCLM and code refactoring
Occasionally focus on refactoring rather than coding for hard deadlines
Collaborate with the other principal engineers, frontend/backend developers and engineering managers within our department to propose and compare design and technology options

You are proactive and initiate and execute process and technical improvements across the department
You can assess the severity/impact of bugs quickly to help set priority and align this with Product and Engineering Management.
You lead and ensure quality on operational artefacts (e.g. post-mortems, run books) for the ERP backend
Your technical solutions and narratives propose reasoned solutions factoring in all arguments (technical and commercial) and provide clear analysis of the trade-offs and wins in different approaches
Through collaboration across teams and roles as well as your in-depth technical analysis and understanding of the system’s architecture and domain, you inform and enable business decisions that lead to reduction of costs, complexity, paying down technical debt, or unlocking customer value creation
You hold strong technical expertise in S/4HANA environment - OData, CDS Views, and ABAP Service Implementations mainly in one of the functional areas of S/4HANA BRIM, Retail, Controlling or Treasury Management
Knowledge on RAP, CAP, BTP or AWS services is high welcomed
You own strong leadership skills to drive technological change as well as to guide other engineers to ensure the ERP engineering teams complete projects on time and within budgets
You have at least 10 years of relevant hands-on work experience using ERP ABAP-OO development
You are well versed in Object Oriented (OO) concepts and fluent about engineering tools and processes
You wield adaptability and desire to learn new skills
You own a practical work approach and flexibility with changing requirements
You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
