THE ROLE & THE TEAM
As a Principal Applied Scientist at Zalando Lounge, you will foster data-driven decision-making by designing experimentation frameworks in key areas of our business and analyzing complex A/B tests. You will serve as an expert on causal inference and statistical modelling. Together with fellow economists on our team, you will participate in wide research efforts that impact company strategy and product development. You will collaborate with other applied scientists, data analysts, product managers, software developers, data engineers, and commercial stakeholders.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

  • Designing experimentation frameworks in new areas (KPIs, unit of randomization, statistical power analysis, variance reduction, etc.) 

  • Designing and carrying out experiments in complex cases. For example, when straightforward designs generate substantial SUTVA violations or when the relationship between the effect during the test and the long-term effect is not trivial. 

  • Identifying causal relationships using observational data, to inform product development.

  • Using economic modeling and first principles thinking to guide business decisions.

  • Providing egoless constructive scientific feedback to peers and coaching junior colleagues. 

  • Set broad scientific roadmaps across the division and are required to bring a significant industry track record and scientific leadership experience.

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

  • Ph.D. in Economics with an emphasis on quantitative research methods. At least two years of professional experience. 

  • Expertise in experimentation

  • Experience with quasi-experimental research methods (e.g. DML, causal forest, difference-in-differences).

  • Strong general scientific problem solving skills. 

  • Proficiency in Python and knowledge of SQL. 

  • Regular use of AI-based analytical tools and a mindset of constant exploration of new developments in this field

  • Ability to communicate analytical insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
