We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Managing Editor (Maternity Cover) to join Zalando’s Inspiration and Entertainment venture. This role is crucial for maintaining the momentum of our content innovation and experimentation; spanning streetwear, designer, sports, and lifestyle themes relevant for a primary audience of millennial and Gen Z fashion enthusiasts. You will be instrumental in connecting editorial expertise, creative production, and a strong understanding of data, insights, and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, ensuring a seamless continuation of our work in embracing a new future for online retail.

As a Managing Editor (Maternity Cover), you will step into a fast-paced environment, contributing to culture-led storytelling and collaborating with various content teams, production units, and analytics teams to unlock new pathways of content innovation and experimentation. You will create new formats, franchises, and production workflows, enabling our teams and a pool of creators to produce fresh and engaging content for our audience.

This role will be on a fixed-term contract for approximately 12 months. The team is based in Berlin and relocation is mandatory.
 

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

  • Lead content experiments, collaborating with the experimentation team to craft hypotheses and ensure content readiness for validation.

  • Explore and implement new edit workflows and formats, leveraging gen AI tools.

  • Utilize excellent editorial skills to ideate, plan, and execute stories that achieve Zalando's strategic consumer and brand positioning objectives.

  • Transform ideas into engaging content, developing new recurring formats and franchises, and writing or delegating copy as needed.

  • Review content from contributors and partners, providing constructive feedback aligned with user needs, strategic goals, and Zalando guidelines.

  • Command various content formats, including video and longer-form features, with an instinctive know-how for concise storytelling.

  • Optimize content planning, development, and execution using data, buying reviews, and customer research, contributing to the wider content strategy and curating onsite destinations.
     

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

  • You hold a degree from a journalism school, completed an editorial traineeship, or possess equivalent professional experience.

  • You have extensive editorial experience in a fast-paced environment at a publisher, agency, e-commerce retailer, or brand, ideally in streetwear or luxury fashion.

  • You possess a deep understanding of fashion’s cultural creators, curators, and junction makers. From global icons and brands to niche designers and influential agenda setters, you are well attuned to what is driving the new and noteworthy in fashion and the wider cultural orbit.

  • You have extensive experience and expertise in creating and editing written content, as well as adapting content to different channels and audiences.

  • You have familiarity and hands-on experience with typical editorial processes, methods, and ways of working such as story ideation, briefing, copywriting, sub-editing, fact-checking, and publishing.

  • You are fluent in visual storytelling, capable of providing clear and constructive feedback on the interplay between text and visuals to guide art direction

  • You have experience using industry-standard CMS; experience using design tools such as Figma and project management software is beneficial.

  • You are an advanced English speaker and writer; a good command of written and spoken German is beneficial.
