THE ROLE & THE TEAM
The Data Platform organization is providing Zalando with a reliable and secure environment for storing and processing data. We drive data engineering productivity and data security through interoperable services for data transformation, storage, serving, exchange, and orchestration, as well as data access management, metadata management, and data discovery. Within the Data Platform organization, the Data Repository team is responsible for managing the petabyte scale Data Lake and Mesh of Zalando, providing pipelines and tooling to ensure security and compliance. Join us as an Engineering Manager, where you'll lead a dynamic team in data engineering while embracing hands-on technical challenges and fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
Manage a team of talented software engineers building mission-critical data platform services that serve the entire Zalando data community
Develop a stellar team culture, coaching, guiding and supporting their direct reports and colleagues in their career journey, while cultivating a culture of ownership and customer centricity
Partner with the product manager and the principal engineer and balance delivering amazing customer experiences whilst taking into account the level of security and compliance that modern day data services require
Influence and contribute to the product roadmap and the long term evolution of Zalando’s Data Lake / Mesh architecture and capabilities
Enhance and deliver data access control capabilities of the data platform systems to ensure compliance with GDPR and antitrust regulations
Ensure delivery of stable, scalable, secure production services that meet the set expectations in terms of quality, performance and operational excellence
WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF
You are a talented technology leader with a successful track record of building and growing high-performing software engineering teams, coaching and mentoring your team in their career journey
You have experience in cloud engineering, data engineering, building analytical data products and a strong understanding of how a data platform best empowers builders to efficiently work with data
You have experience in database or system operation at scale, in system integration and running systems with high availability, reliability, performance and cost efficiency
You have practical experience in data infrastructure, industry standard DWH and big data technologies such as SQL, Spark/Databricks, Trino, BigQuery, Redshift or Hive operated in a public cloud environment, ideally AWS
You practise and advocate the best software engineering practices and you are an expert in technologies and concepts such as container based computing platforms (Docker, Kubernetes), test automation, CI/CD practices, system operation tools and methods (e.g. for tracing, monitoring, alerting)
You have experience in cooperating with multiple product, project, engineering and vendor teams as part of several cross–organisational initiatives
