Engineering Manager - Zalando eCommerce Platform Sciences
THE ROLE & THE TEAM
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Engineering/ MLOps Team, that will focus on unification, standardisation, and operational excellence of our infrastructure, ensure the successful execution of the department's machine learning initiatives and focus on improving personalization, ranking, search and recommendations.
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of exceptional engineers who work closely with data scientists to enhance the experience of over 51 million customers. You will be responsible for ensuring the operations of algorithms, datasets, and systems your team owns, delivering department-wide and cross-department projects in collaboration with several teams. You will work with science and engineering leaders, product managers and other stakeholders to make sure that we are investing in the right opportunities. You are a strong people leader who will effectively coach an engineering team and will help to develop, coach and grow our talents.
Together with our Leadership, you will work on the future strategy and vision for our teams.
WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
- Bring your strong technical and leading experience in managing, mentoring and developing a team of Engineers / MLOps, focusing on areas such as personalisation to help our millions of customers in their inspiration journey.
- Manage a healthy, high-performing delivery team of engineers, providing direction and context on topics such as customer impact and business requirements, and overseeing all aspects of the delivery lifecycle: design, experimentation, implementation, testing and maintenance.
- Set up the processes that will help balance capacity between the department’s key initiatives and Platform vision.
- Empower the team to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and how to apply them into our area. Set a high bar of engineering and operational excellence.
- Work closely with other engineering and science leaders, product managers and other business stakeholders to bring our state-of-the-art solutions to the customers and discover and identify new opportunities.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- 10+ years of engineering experience (especially around ML products in large-scale setups), including 2+ years in people management and technical leadership management, especially around ML products in large scale setups.
- Exceptional management and communication skills, and above all, be a strong people leader who understands how to effectively manage and coach an Engineering team, maintaining trustful relationships and setting a high standard as an example.
- Experience leading teams to solve large-scale real-world problems creating customer impact. Strong drive and entrepreneurial spirit to partner with product, science/engineering managers and principals to connect and solve business problems.
- Experience in building, deploying and operating data-driven systems in a cloud environment, including experience with feature stores & feature engineering pipelines, data ingestion & transformation, and machine learning workflow orchestration.
- A solid technical background working with big data and high-throughput distributed infrastructure. Experience with AWS (EC2, S3, SageMaker), Databricks, Java/Scala, Python, Apache Airflow, and NoSQL databases.
- Experience in developing long-term engineering roadmaps and strong project management skills
