What could you achieve if you were an applied scientist in fashion and retail e-commerce?
For Julia Lasserre, Principal Applied Scientist for Size and Fit at Zalando, the opportunities certainly seem endless. In her conversation with Janine Matos for the Pieces of Me podcast, she explains the huge role Applied Science has to play in designing the future of fashion.
“I’m excited about helping retailers like Zalando to reduce waste by planning demand better and producing garments very quickly. In the end I can imagine that you click a button and the garment is made for you.”
Julia also discusses how her Size and Fit team works day-to-day, as they transform data into the algorithms that help customers get the right fit first time. They spend lots of time connecting with the brands: learning how they design their garments and getting data early so as to predict any size and fit issues.
“As we strengthen these partnerships with the brands, they gain insights from our platform, and we gain insights from the built garments. It’s a big part of the team’s work.”
The conversation also turned to the Applied Science community at Zalando, the benefits of living in Berlin, and Women in Tech — an issue that Julia’s passionate about.
“There’s already been a lot of progress. But that doesn’t mean we can stop. We’ve pushed continuously, and it’s really important that this goes on.”
