As part of our team, you will operate, improve, and extend the edge delivery and protection, ingress, gateway infrastructure that powers Zalando’s service landscape. We manage ingress infrastructure for 100+ Kubernetes clusters and handle millions of requests daily, processing up to 5 million requests per second during flagship commercial events like CyberWeek.
Our team maintains Skipper, a modern open source Http router and reverse proxy, as well as higher-level applications built on top of it. This role provides the opportunity to work with Kubernetes, AWS, and Go. You will help to continuously improve user experience, efficiency, and reliability of our products with a strong focus on operational excellence.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
Lead and architect features and services from problem definition through solution delivery and ongoing operations for our large-scale Kubernetes infrastructure.
Design and implement solutions to simplify our systems, reduce technical debt, and improve scalability and reliability of our Ingress stack.
Promote operational excellence by adhering to and improving design principles such as performing operations as code, making frequent and small reversible changes, anticipating failure, and learning from all operational events and failures.
Show a strong customer/user focus and translate business requirements into effective technical solutions and lead the development and implementation of relevant, scalable solutions that align with business goals.
Take high levels of ownership and accountability, leading critical projects and mentoring team members.
Actively contribute to and encourage participation in open source projects as part of your daily work.
Make a significant impact on our engineering culture by leading knowledge sharing initiatives and driving technical discussions within the team, across departments, and in the broader engineering community.
WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF
You have extensive experience in writing and architecting production applications in Go, with at least 5+ years of hands-on development and system design.
Write and review code that is simple, readable, testable, and maintainable, with a focus on performance and scalability.
Are an excellent communicator within the engineering community, with strong verbal and written communication skills in English, able to present complex technical concepts clearly and in a structured manner.
Have advanced understanding of networking concepts like DNS, reverse proxy, load balancing, and routing, with experience implementing these at scale.
Possess deep understanding of Kubernetes concepts and can design, deploy, and manage complex applications within large Kubernetes clusters.
Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of AWS services including but not limited to EC2, ALB/NLB, and ACM, with experience in architecting cloud-native solutions.
Have strong expertise in CI/CD practices and a track record of implementing robust logging, monitoring (Prometheus, Grafana), and overall operational excellence in large-scale environments.
Exhibit a growth mindset and a passion for continuous learning in infrastructure technologies.
