Zalando's Performance Marketing department is creating and deepening relationships with consumers outside of Zalando premises by showcasing our digital ads. We’re marketing Zalando’s flawless choice, our best in fashion inspiration and the shopping convenience our customers love. Our Applied Science team for Performance Marketing works closely with product management, engineering, and analytics to enhance our industry-leading performance marketing engine. We primarily focus on developing systems that accurately measure the incremental value of marketing activities and optimise marketing investments.
As an Applied Scientist in this role, you'll play a crucial part in maximising the efficiency of our substantial marketing budget across major platforms like Google and Meta. Your expertise will be instrumental in continuously assessing and attributing the incremental return on every Euro spent and ensuring that our marketing investments are strategically allocated for optimal results.
WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
We are seeking a dynamic individual to tackle complex challenges in performance marketing measurement and optimization. The ideal candidate is a quick learner and innovative problem-solver with a quantitative background in fields such as statistics, mathematics, econometrics, or machine learning. The ideal candidate can work in a complex data environment and has machine learning experience.
You will join a team of Applied Scientists working on
Measuring the impact of marketing through the entire marketing funnel
Optimizing the efficiency of the investment of performance marketing.
Optimizing the steering of marketing investment at Zalando to make sure we meet profitability targets.
Developing solutions that optimize the marketing investments at product level.
To address those problems, the team uses:
Complex A/B testing set-up
Causal inference
Classical ML modelling on tabular data / Time series forecasting
A lot of data exploration and analysis
We work in a complex large data environment that requires advanced technical and coding skills. We expect the new joiner to work on measurement and predictive capabilities for performance marketing.
WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF
In order to succeed in this role, we are looking for:

Strong academic background in a highly quantitative field (statistics, mathematics, machine learning, etc).
Proven track record of independently tackling concrete research problems and autonomously finding a path to a solution.
Experience in building machine learning algorithms
Data intuition: experience working with large datasets, ability to identify appropriate statistical modelling assumptions and approaches.
Good coding skills in Python and SQL, writing unit/integration tests and proficient in code documentation and packaging.
Good communication skills to translate (even complex) analytical / engineering decisions and outcomes to both peers and a broader, non-technical audience.

Experience with common big data processing and manipulation tools such as PySpark and SQL.
Experience in the deployment of ML model in production.
Experience with orchestration tools (for instance, Airflow).
Experience in time series analysis and forecasting.
Knowledge of A|B testing, causal inference.
Knowledge of performance marketing.
