Zalando fulfills more than a hundred million customer orders every year and volumes are increasing. Fulfillment Core within Zalando builds and operates systems that are at the core of Zalando’s platform strategy and ensure timely, efficient, and correct delivery of every one of our customers’ 185+ million orders every year.
Enabling the fulfillment of orders is a complex process, involving the choice of physical locations of our warehouses and the placement of stock, the planning of inner warehouse processes and capacity management, the management of a diverse range of fulfillment and delivery configurations, all while optimizing towards various competing targets.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in transforming Zalando's supply chain by enhancing customer experience, and addressing complex and critical challenges. You will help develop financially viable self-serve products utilizing Optimization or Simulation techniques together with Applied Scientists. Collaborating with a team of highly talented colleagues in Fulfillment Core, you will drive innovation and resilience within our supply chain operations.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)
Together with other Operations Research scientists, Applied scientists and Analysts from Fulfillment Core, you will immerse yourself in the domain and develop applications that support complex mathematical models to ensure that the right product is available at the right location at the right time, all while adhering to our network constraints.
You will collaborate with our skilled applied scientists to implement mathematical models in production and assist in maintaining and adapting them.
You will work closely with our stakeholders to understand the current goals and challenges within the fulfillment domain.
You will utilize a cloud-based tech stack including: AWS, JVM, Kubernetes, Databricks, and Python.
As a member of Fulfillment Core, you will also provide inputs to other product initiatives across the business unit.
More generally, you will be part of our vibrant community of Engineers at Zalando, participating, for example, in regular exchange meetings, guilds and mentoring opportunities.
WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF
You have extensive industry experience designing, developing and operating data-intensive production systems in an operational environment.
You have experience building distributed systems with either a JVM based language (e.g. Java, Kotlin) or Python.
You have a deep understanding of microservice architecture, REST services, event based systems and API design in order to build scalable solutions.
You are familiar with CI/CD tools, container/orchestration tools such as AWS, Kubernetes, Docker and other data processing and analysis tools like SageMaker, Databricks and Airflow.
You are familiar and have worked before with optimization solvers and discrete event simulation experience.
You are eager to collaborate with Operations Research or Applied scientists to test and productionize mathematical models.
You are highly self-motivated, with a strong sense of ownership, accountability and eagerness to learn.
You have strong communication and stakeholder management skills as well as the ability to manage projects with many dependencies.
You’re fluent in English and have excellent technical communication skills and can present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a non technical audience.
