Zalando’s Economics and Experimentation department is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to strategically scale our Experimentation Platform to meet our evolving business needs.
The Experimentation Platform team is responsible for innovating and enhancing the tools, systems, and processes that enable dozens of teams at Zalando to continuously test hypotheses and improve our products and services in a data-driven manner. In this key role, your leadership will directly influence the evolution of Zalando’s robust and trustworthy experimentation infrastructure, which is central to our data-driven decision-making process.
We are looking for a technically adept, results-oriented leader with a proven track record to help build Zalando’s next-generation experimentation platform. As Engineering Manager, you will lead, grow, and inspire a team tasked with designing and developing our mission-critical Experimentation Platform. This role will focus on a new team dedicated to developing, deploying, operating, and scaling tailored tools for specific business domains at Zalando. Our goal is to bridge the gap between generic experimentation capabilities and domain-specific needs, enhancing the platform’s effectiveness.
Your technical expertise will guide the team, ensuring the quality and timeliness of their work. You will play a crucial role in championing and expanding Zalando’s culture of innovation and experimentation, connecting new domains to experimentation, and scaling existing ones. This is essential to achieving our long-term goal of ensuring that important business decisions are underpinned by experimentation and supported by accurate, high-quality data.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
5+ years of engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a technical management or leadership role. Experience in building and leading diverse engineering or data science teams is a plus.
Hands-on experience with software engineering in web services and data systems, with familiarity in scalable infrastructure technologies like Kafka and Kubernetes, Databricks, Flink, and backend web service principles (e.g., RESTful services).
Strong understanding of system design, data engineering, data flow, scalability considerations, and continuous integration/deployment processes. Knowledge of JVM-based languages (Java, Scala) is a plus.
Experience in Python, Scala, and Spark is advantageous, as is working with machine learning products, knowledge of MLops and PyTorch is a plus.
Passionate about developing people and platforms, with a focus on fostering a strong engineering culture. Exceptional communication skills, empathetic leadership, and a solution-oriented approach.
Strong product sense with a deep understanding of customer needs and a commitment to helping them succeed.
Experience with A/B testing platforms, feature management/flags, statistical frameworks, and data governance.
Fluency in English, with an eagerness to learn and adapt in unfamiliar territories.
