Post-it notes for the next generation: What a tech career really looks like
Technical skills get you in the door – but human skills keep the ideas moving. Senior Program Manager Maike Kuhnert shares why collaboration, curiosity and problem-solving are the real essentials for tech talent at our Dortmund hub.

If we could send a note back in time to our younger selves, it would look like this whiteboard from our Dortmund hub.
During Girls’ Day, Senior Program Manager Maike Kuhnert sat down with the next generation of talent to deconstruct IT careers. Together, they mapped out what really matters. While credentials often get the spotlight, the heart of innovation at Zalando lies in human-centric skills: collaboration, curiosity and empathy.
What did you discuss during the session?
Maike: We started by listing the skills you need to work in IT. We placed them on the board and debated why some matter more than others. We didn't always agree — topics like maths, English, creativity and puzzle-solving sparked the most discussion.
Do you agree with the board’s final layout?
Maike: Yes and no. Our goal was to show that while you can learn technical skills, the things you already love - like teamwork or problem-solving - are often just as important. You don’t need a traditional tech background to have a huge impact.
Which note stands out to you?
Maike: I loved seeing ‘team power’ right at the top. This generation already understands that working together is how you create something meaningful.
What would your own post-it have said at the start of your career?
Maike: I used to think coding was the only thing that mattered. I thought if you weren’t a coding expert, you couldn't have a career in tech.
Where would that note sit today?
Maike: It would definitely move. Communication, creativity and problem-solving are the skills I use most. They gave me the foundation to learn code on the job and grow my career.
What’s the most important quality for the next generation of talent?
Maike: Adaptability. Our environment changes fast. You need to process information quickly, stay analytical and make sensitive, human decisions rather than just following what AI says.
