No Straight Lines to Tech
In a recent panel at our Dortmund office, we took on the old idea that a traditional computer science degree is the only entry ticket to the tech world. The session, titled "Diverse as we," was all about celebrating the unconventional.
Moderated by Lydia Tenuta, the panel featured the diverse journeys of three talented Zalandos: Lena Brüder, Maike Kuhnert, and Jumana Al Masri. They shared their unique stories, highlighting the skills and experiences they brought from a wide array of previous professions.
To visualize this rich tapestry of talent, we grabbed a whiteboard and collaboratively filled it with the jobs our employees held before they moved into tech. The result was a powerful testament to how skills like problem-solving and creativity are invaluable assets in this industry. It served as a great reminder that a winding career path is not a detour, but a journey that enriches both the individual and the teams they join.
The Whole City's Talking
The conversation didn’t stop at our office doors. The "DiverseCity Dortmund" event brought people together from all over the city to talk about building a more inclusive future. And the location—the historic Zeche Zollern coal mine—was the perfect backdrop for a conversation about transformation.
Two speakers in particular really got us thinking:
- Dr. Max Appenroth from Diversity Factory GmbH gave a fresh take on what diversity actually means. It’s about more than just a few labels; it’s about the whole, complex, interesting person.
- Catherine Ngoli from Vaunda n.e.V. showed us what inclusive leadership looks like in action. She used the audience to prove her point: top-down leadership is out. Teamwork and trust are in.
From Talk to Action
The best part of "DiverseCity Dortmund"? It wasn’t just talk. The event included "Barsessions," which were designed to spark real action. A group of our own Zalandos hosted one focused on a topic close to our hearts: Women in Tech.
The goal wasn’t just to talk about the gender gap. It was about brainstorming concrete ideas to get more women and girls excited about a future in tech. The energy in the room was incredible. It showed that when we work together, we can start to build a more balanced and creative industry.
Our Final Takeaway
From personal stories in our office to city-wide plans, one thing is certain: diversity is what will drive tech forward. In Dortmund and beyond, we're excited to be part of building a future that’s as dynamic and creative as the people in it.
