Zalando's Performance Marketing department is creating and deepening relationships with consumers outside of Zalando premises by showcasing our digital ads. We’re marketing Zalando’s flawless choice, our best in fashion inspiration and the shopping convenience our customers love. We use the latest technology to make our ads relevant and engaging to consumers while fully respecting customer privacy. 

Our applied science team for Performance Measurement collaborates with product management, engineering and analytics to innovate our best-in-industry performance marketing engine, primarily focussing on systems to measure the incremental value of marketing activities.

The available role as applied scientist is critical for optimizing our 9-figure marketing investments on platforms like Google and Meta, as you help to accurately and continuously measure and attribute the incremental return of every Euro spent. 

Your contributions will improve key components of marketing measurement: models we apply for marketing campaign attribution and their calibration to accurately mirror the incremental performance of marketing investments, and the continuous generation of incrementality insights via controlled experiments, causal inference and machine learning.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

As applied scientist in Performance Measurement, you will:  

  • Define well stated business problems and measurement challenges with stakeholders and create research plans that outline the necessary steps to come to a solution.

  • Develop hypotheses for how to increase the coverage and accuracy of our incrementality measurement and effectively conduct experiments or apply causal modeling techniques to test them.  

  • Bring in your strong scientific experience to support advanced experimentation methods at scale to measure marketing effectiveness.

  • Support high-stakes experiments and problems in a range of experiment domains and ensure decisions are made from robust insights.

  • Set and own the processes to improve the quality of experimentation and measurement in performance marketing.

  • Bring your insights to a state that delivers business value, including writing reports on your insights, productionizing data input and output and implementing algorithms at production quality.

  • Present your projects to stakeholders of different backgrounds and technical depth, and share learnings with the scientific community at Zalando.
     

WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

  •  We’re looking for proficiency in the following areas in order to succeed in this role:
  • Strong academic background in machine learning, data mining, economics, or artificial intelligence, accompanied by 1-3 years of industry experience.
  • Proven track record of independently tackling concrete research problems and autonomously finding a path to a solution.
  • Expertise in 2 or more of the following areas:
  • Experience building causal inference products; from the problem analysis and data selection to their production deployment.
  • Applied high dimensional statistics, variance reduction techniques.
  • Extrapolation of test results into continuous estimates.
  • Understanding of multi-touch attribution models in marketing and data-driven improvements to them.
  • Bayesian approaches to A/B testing.
  • Data intuition: experience working with large online datasets, ability to identify appropriate statistical modeling assumptions and approaches.
  • Coding skills in Python as well as experience with common big data processing and manipulation tools such as PySpark and SQL.
  • Experience deploying models to production, writing unit/integration tests, and documentation. Experience with cloud computing frameworks (e.g. AWS) is a plus.
  • Good communication skills to translate (even complex) analytical / engineering decisions and outcomes to both peers and a broader, non-technical audience
